Lady's Slipper Orchids are magical plants of the Cypripedium genus. This genus is found across the globe with some stunning varieties growing in North America. I first came across wild Lady's Slipper orchids when I was 19. I was hiking in a forest in the NW corner of New Jersey. On my hike I rounded a bend and encountered a colony of Pink Lady's Slipper orchids. I am still struck with that same sense of awe when ever I am lucky enough to encounter them in the wild.
Lady's Slipper Orchids thrive in woodlands along the eastern seaboard. Often they grow deep in the woods rather than along the edges. It seems these plants partner with the mystery that is found in the shaded interior woodlands. They generally retreat from land which humans encroach upon. Uninformed people have tried to dig up and transplant the orchids. It never works because they have a specialized, symbiotic relationship with soil microbes.
