Website Re-opening Soon

When Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina it took me sideways and many ways.  . .The events of the morning of September 27th, 2024 unfolded in cinematic fashion. The whipping wind, the rain and the rain that kept coming. First a leak in the roof then erosion in the yard then water in the basement . . . those were the least of our problems.

The rain pounded relentlessly as I watched the small branch next to the house become a monster. On a normal day this branch was ankle deep and 1 foot wide. But, that day it grew and grew. It was along this branch that first landslide arrived.

I was outside checking on the basement and heard a sound roaring from behind me. I crouched and put my hands over my head then it came, the first landslide that took an entire room with it. I ran inside and the living room was filled with thick mud. I could see clear through to the outside and 5 foot deep and 5 wide river of mud and debris was rushing alongside the house.

Next a tree fell and knocked our 300 gallon propane tank clear across the yard. On top of the sense of urgency the air was filled with propane gas - which kept spewing for several days. The situation was alarming. That was when I started to move my essences from the office. One by one I moved boxes out of harms way but I could not move all of them in time.

As this was happening there was what I call an un-Godly sound. This was landslide #2 - this was 30 feet of mud and trees making a bee line for our home. It was one of those situations where had my wife and I been 15 feet to the left we would be dead. It was truly a mind boggling experience to be inside of a building as it is being torn apart and crumbling.

I managed to jump through a broken window but my wife did get swept into the mud flow. She was behind me but the floor under where she was tipped back sliding her into the mud flow. Once I was safe outside I turned around and was alarmed to be alone. I ran back screaming her name. At this point the entire kitchen, living room, and dining room was just an open space.

While I was calling her name she was swirling in the mud that replaced our house. She knew she had little time to act and at the first opening she slid to safety. She could hear me and knew which direction to go. All of a sudden she appeared covered in mud. All I could see were the whites of her eyes, the rest was mud.

We hightailed it out of there . . . I remember looking back and sobbing. I just had no idea what to do or what was happening or if it was over. And, like an explosion that concludes a movie scene that was a wrap. That landslide denuded the dense forest behind the house. This forest had numerous 80-100 foot Tulip Poplar trees along with dense old growth rhododendron.

This wild account is why I had to close my website!

I still feel in process and I know re-opening will come with it’s own challenges but I look forward to rebuilding and adding new products.
